• Lift the plant and inspect the roots for rot: healthy roots are firm and pale, failing roots are dark, soft, and often smell sour
• Inspect stems and leaf undersides for scale, mealybug, spider mites, and fungus gnats, which spread quietly between plants in an office
• Confirm the pot actually drains and is not sitting in a decorative container holding water
• Prune damaged growth, correct the watering schedule, and re-check the plant on the next visit rather than changing five variables at once

Can every declining plant be saved?

No, and it is worth saying plainly. Root rot past a certain point, a heavy long-established infestation, or a plant that was simply specified for more light than the room will ever have are all situations where replacement is the honest answer rather than another round of treatment.
